Simpson was born in
Eccles, Greater Manchester. His father is from Jamaica and his mother is
English. Simpson was picked up by Manchester United at a very early age
and progressed through the youth system at Old Trafford.
He made his debut for Manchester United in South Africa, playing Kaizer
Chiefs. His years at Old Trafford was not as a regular first teamer, but
many periods out on loan to other clubs such as Royal Antwerpen,
Sunderland and Newcastle, who he later signed a permanent deal with.
He established himself at St James Park as a first choice right back and
from his move i 2009, first on loan, he made 123 first team league
appearances before he made his next move to Queens Park Rangers.
He was signed by Nigel Pearson as a right back alternative, but with
another former Manchester United recruit covering that position, Ritchie
De Laet, it was a bit of a struggle in his first season, also disrupted
by a legal family problem, that made him unavailable for parts of the
Claudio Ranieri arrived and then decided to give Simpson the right back
position as Ritchie De Laet was loaned out and later sold. Simpson never
looked back and has since been a key player with good and reliable
performances. He is very strong in his defending and his hard working
attitude is a great plus.
