EFL Cup draw, north and south, Sheffield United v. Leicester City

DATE: 10.08.2017 - THE CUNNING FOX - NEWSDESK

The Premier League teams, not competing in Europe, were all in the bowl for the 2nd round games in the EFL Cup. City will play Sheffield United away in the week comencing August 21.

Nigel Pearson and Claudio Ranierie, the two previous Leicester City managers, never really made any priority out of this cup, and fielded often teams of players in the academy and the reserves.

Sheffield United might not be eager to play their best team either and it could be that foxes / blades players Richard Stearman and Harry Maguire might be rested for this clash, but again would like to see them play against their former teams.

Blades are back at level two in english football, and they have a grand and up to date stadium that can host events even in the Premier League. They have over the years been a good cup team, especially a few years back reaching the semi's of the FA Cup.

The 2nd round draw is devided in a south and north section, and that is a new way of looking at it. There were some thoughts about making the EFL Cup simular to the Champions League, with group stages, but so far that has not materialised.

City have a good tradition in the EFL Cup, winning it three times, 1964, 1997 and 2000. They also played in the final in 1965 and 1999. This is a route to European football and last years winners were Manchester United.

Excited to see what type of priority Craig Shakespeare will give this game, but we all know that even fielding a weaker side could be enough to secure a place in the 3rd round, with a good squad of players to chose from.
