Rosenborg are through to
the group stages of the Europa League, after two great wins against
last seasons finalists Ajax, who lost the final a few months ago to
Former Arsenal and Nottingham Forest forward Nicklas Bendtner was
massive in the game at Lerkendal, scoring one, and the other's came
from newly signed forward Samuel Adegbenro.
Adegbenro made an instant impact when coming on in Amsterdam,
scoring the only goal, and today as well scoring two beautiful goals
against one of the best teams in Europe.
A fee in the region of £ 1 million was what Rosenborg paid
for the Nigerian forward, which in Norway is a major amount to pay
for a footballer. Bendtner has been steady progressing during the
season and today showed his best for Rosenborg. He was signed on a
So what has this to do with Leicester, maybe not much, but there is
a link to talk a bit about. Viking manager at the moment, Ian
Burchnall is born in Leicester, he has been working in Norwegian
football since 2012.
Today's goalscorer Samuel Adegbenro was sold by Burchnall and Viking
Stavanger just weeks ago to steady the ship financially. Today might
think they have sold a bit early or for money that could easilly
have been doubled, but they might have to wait until Rosenborg
decides to sell.
Burchnall is of course a Leicester City fan, but he made his trade
in football via clubs such as Leeds United and Bradford City. His
first job in Norway was as an assistent to fromer Leicester City
player Brian Deane, at Sarpsborg.
Burchnall and Deane build a great foundation at
Sarpsborg who they established in the top flight and has grown to
become one of the better teams in the league, currently 2nd with
only Rosenborg in front of them.
After his time at Sarpsborg, Burchnall joined Viking as assistent to
Kjell Jonevret, and when Jonevret was sacked Burchnall took over and
is still in charge, despite a very problematic season, Viking still
bottom, but only four points away from a play-off position.
Selling Adegbenro, who is Nigerian 21 year old forward / winger, was
of course something Burchnall would have liked to avoid, but with
heavy financial difficulties it was needed to make the sale of the
Burchnall most take credit for bringing forward such a young good
player and today you saw the result with two fantastic goals against
one of the best teams in Europe. Ajax will, for the first time since
1965, not be competing in Europe.
Another Englishman and former Birmingham City defender Graham
Potter, who played against Leicester City on several occasions for
his former clubs made a miracle this evening, taking Ostersund SK
into the group stages of the Europa League.
Winning 2-0 against PAOK at home tonight and scoring one away made
them go through on away goals. Amazing result and for a club
competing on level four in Sweden six years ago, this is just
Potter took over the club in 2011 and have since climbed the
divisions in Sweden and currently in a safe 8th position in the top
flight in Sweden. Fun to follow the two Scandinavian teams this fall
in the Europa League group stages.
Ajax and Leicester who last season reached the final of the Europa
League and the quarter final of the Champions League are not there
this season, with Ostersund and Rosenborg getting through. Great to
see that the world of football still is full of surprises and 100 %
