Leicester 1 - Chelsea 2, positives and negatives, player ratings and match report

DATE: 09.09.2017 - THE CUNNING FOX - NEWSDESK

City started the game brightly and during the first half we were really enjoying watching a game that had two teams in it, but after 90 minutes the first home defeat of the season was a fact

Chelsea is a great football team and they picked up their third win in as many games. Conte had his new man from Leicester safely placed on the bench for the 90 minutes with Kantè again brilliant for Chelsea, playing a key role and scoring the winner.

Vardy had a chance to score early on, but his shot was not well placed. Then a great counter attack set up by Mahrez, having both Vardy and Slimani to pass, makes the pass to Slimani, and the Algerian never used this to his advantage, with a bad finish saved by Courtois.

Slimani should be credited for a great run, but could have passed the ball to Vardy and the goal would have been totally open and the finish for Vardy would have been easy, just passing the ball over the line.

Instead Chelsea used this all to their advantage, with the Leicester team out of balance. In the next attack Chelsea were 1-0 up, with a great header from Alvaro Morata, who looks like a fantastic signing for Chelsea.

This was late in the first half and City should be credited for great play, hard work and really showing that City are a team to be counted. A good first half by City, and if Slimani had been more clinical in his finishing it would surely been 1-0 to City and not the opposite.

To see Leicester making two changes for the 2nd half after a great first half, was a big surprise, and listening to Shakespeare after the game, makes you not really understanding what he was up to, and again he makes a fatal failure tactically against a top team.

Taking of Albrighton is always a risk, and if you replace him with Gray, you will always be more attacking and less defending. To see King replacing Slimani is another move you can't really understand, when you are 1-0 down.

The tactical blunder from Shakespeare makes everything unbalanced, and suddenly playing 4-5-1. This makes it a bit difficult in the start of the 2nd half and adjustments doesn't work as well as you would expect. Chelsea scores one more and suddenly City are 2-0 down at home.

Jamie Vardy works hard for City and he is one that never give up. He makes a penalty on his own, chasing a ball that is really lost, but Courtois had to try to take the ball and instead he is on Vardy's foot, no problem, a clear penalty.

Vardy takes the penalty himself and it's a clinical shot. TCF don't know what Shakespeare is thinking about, but to leave Iheanacho on the bench for so long against Chelsea is another massive blunder and can't understand his decission making in this game.

Shakespeare also tells in the post match interview that Okazaki is rested because of travelling, and he has earlier said that the player is so important to City's team and to see him totally out of everything is strange.

The reason could be that Ulloa, who has not been out travelling and on international duty, was given the place on the bench, and use this as a reason to make a bit of rotation, but in the end it only opened for people to wonder what had happened to Okazaki.

The fact that Ulloa has signed a new deal, makes this a bit difficult for Shakespeare, since Vardy, Slimani, Okazaki and Iheanacho surely are in front of the Argentinian and to give such a signal to Okazaki is strange.

When Iheanacho is given his home debut, Shakespeare switch back to a 4-4-2, but it's too late.

So to sum up the game, here are our positvies and negatives, player ratings and match stats,

Positives:
Keeping Chelsea busy and really playing well during most of the game
Ndidi and James starting to work as a team
Vardy on fire, scoring one, close on a second
Excellent in 4-4-2, or if you like 4-4-1-1, that is the way to play

Negatives
Not able to get anything out of the game, another donut for Shakespeare and Leicester City
Strange substitutions after first half, cannot understand why
Gray not making an impact at all, not in the game and very disapointing performance
Shakespeare experiments during a game against the best team in England, is not working
No bonus this time either, we need to get something against all opponents at home
Four minutes extra time, should have been five just for the wait on Moses getting of the pitch
Strange to not give Iheanocho more minutes in a game that could have been won or at least drawn

Player ratings:
Schmeichel 6, Simpson 5, Maguire 6, Fuchs 6, Morgan 7, Ndidi 7, James 6, Mahrez 6, Vardy 8, Slimani 5
Subs: King 5, Gray 4, Iheanacho

Match Stats:
H/A
Posession: 43 % / 57 %
Corners: 2 / 9
Shots on target: 1 / 4
