Fleetwood 0 - Leicester 0, positives and negatives, player ratings and match report

DATE: 07.01.2017 - THE CUNNING FOX - NEWSDESK

Claude Puel made a number of changes to his side, when taking on Fleetwood Town at Highbury in the FA Cup 3rd round this Saturday, the 6th of January

Fleetwood, 13th in Leauge One at the moment, could be a banana skin, and early in the 2nd half they should have been rewarded a free kick inside the penalty box, when Jakupovic, who was in goal this evening, put his hands on a backpass from Dragovic.

The referee does nothing and it could have been seen as a no controll pass, because that is the only reason to not whistle for a free kick, instead the corner from Fleetwood was without any result.

Fleetwood were the better team in the first half against a City team unbalanced and almost random composed. No Mahrez, No Vardy, No Albrighton and No Ndidi, made it difficult to see a pattern and style of Leicester City as we are used to.

Puel composed his side in a formation based on players available, 4-3-3, and it was easy to see that this City team had no real idea on the way to play. The reason from Puel is a bit strange, with the players placed on the bench.

Could have played with Iheanacho on top together with Slimani, instead of fielding three central midfielders. This could give everyone an idea of what will happen in the transfer window. No Musa on the bench either, and Ulloa also overlooked.

The game looked like a pre-season friendly against a team or opponent looking for a chance to upset a big brother. Uwe Rossler, the manager of Fleetwood, was very pleased after the game, seeing this as the highlight in the clubs history.

City had no clear chances on goal and just a few attempts from Islam Slimani who was blocked or stopped before reaching the goalkeeper. Demarai Gray had the chance to show his value, but instead vanished into the clear sky and sun from the sea and beautiful view.

Adrien Silva played his first game from start and it was easy to see that the player needs a lot of 90 minutes to get back to the match fitness level needed to become a first team starter in the Premier League.

Goalkeeper Edlin Jakupovic was another debutant, doing well and the best Leicester player on the field. That tells the story of a game that was close to be lost with a Fleetwood goal post shot just before the end.

Puel probably hoped he could get a win away, but playing with a team like this, it was not to happen. He put on Albrighton, Okazaki and Iheanacho in the late stages of the game. The three never managed to change anything, instead Fleetwood had the best chances in the end.

Harvey Barnes, back on loan from Barnsley, was also given his debut from start, earlier coming on as a sub against Porto in the Champions League. He has yet to play in the Premier Leauge for the club.

Jamie Vardy and his family were present. Vardy is sidelined at the moment and it was never talk about Jamie Vardy playing in this special game against the team that sold him to Leicester City back in the summer of 2012.

Former fox Cian Bolger played the full 90 minutes for Fleetwood, and will most certainly be in the team when the replay will take place at King Power on Tuesday the 16th of January.

Positives:
New playes involved, getting a game when others needed a rest
Getting a draw away on a difficult pitch and possible banana skin with so many changes made
Still a chance to reach the fourth round of the FA Cup
Able to keep more possession than Fleetwood, playing away from home
Keeping a clean sheet, with a back four never fielded before
No yellow cards, no injuries

Negatives:
No big chances, no real treath to Fleetwood
Slimani and Gray had the chance to shine, never did
No goals, not winning a game against a third level side

Player ratings:
Jakupovic 7, Amartey 4, Chilwell 5, Benalouane 4, Dragovic 5, Silva 5, King 5, James 5, Barnes 4, Gray 4, Slimani 5
Subs: Okazaki, Albrighton, Iheanacho
