Leicester City players in the World Cup, backpass and present talk

DATE: 17.05.2018 - THE CUNNING FOX - BLOG

Harry Maguire and Jamie Vardy are both included in the England squad going to Russia next month. A number of other foxes can also make the trip, here are the facts so far

Jamie Vardy and Harry Maguire will both represent England, and the two first to do so since Gordon Banks played in the 1966 World Cup. Since then no Leicester player has been included in any World Cup squad until now in 2018.

Kasper Schmeichel is in the Denmark squad of 35, but he is a certainty and first choice, so believe to see him in Russia. Ahmed Musa, Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho are all in the 30 men preliminary squad of Nigeria. All could be included.

Adrien Silva is among the 23 players to be representing Portugal. Japan has not announced anything, but hopefully Shinji Okazaki will make the squad, being involved in most of the qualification games.

Yohan Benalouane is in the Tunisia squad of 29. Hopefully he will be among the 23 players on the plane to Russia. Benalouane made his Tunisia debut just recently in 1-0 win against Iran.

This is the pack of Leicester City players that could be in for a chance to play in the World Cup this time. Going back thinking about previous players to represent Leicester City in the World Cup, you will always think about
Gordon Banks and Muzzy Izzet.

Banks of course winning the World Cup in 1966, as a Leicester City player, and Muzzy Izzet in 2002, picking up a bronze medal representing Turkey in South Korea and Japan.

Northern Ireland reached the World Cup in 1982 and 1986.
John O'Neill travelled to both tournaments, while Paul Ramsey was included in 1986.

In the 1958 World Cup,
Ken Leek and Willie Cunningham represented Wales and N Ireland. Cunningham played in all the games as N Ireland reached an impressive quarter final. Leek was not inolved and just part of the squad.

Riyad Mahrez played in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, representing Algeria. Matt Elliott (Scotland) and Frank Sinclair (Jamaica) were both representing Leicester City in the 1998 World Cup.

We should also mention
Allan Clarke, Gary Lineker and Peter Shilton and of course Emile Heskey, who are all former players at Leicester City, who all appeared in the World Cup, but for other clubs. Clarke for Leeds in 1970, Shilton for Nottingham Forest (82), Southampton and Derby.
