Ricardo Pereira signed from FC Porto, new player on board, right-back
with international quality
DATE: 26.05.2018 - THE CUNNING FOX - BLOG
Ricardo Pereira is a player who can be a
hit in the Premier League and will put pressure on Danny Simpson.
Pereira will give Claude Puel a more "modern" dimention to suit the
style of play
The signing of
Ricardo Pereira also tells a story of a reunion with his former
manager Claude Puel. Pereira spent a period on loan at Nice from
2015 to 2017, playing 50 league games and scoring two goals.
The price for the right back is in the region of £ 20 million. This
shows the ambition to go forward, but again if Danny Simpson, who
only cost £ 2 million from QPR back in 2014, is the one again
winning the battle, then this is a total step in the wrong direction.
Claude Puel needs to get all his summer deals correct and if the new
players either are placed in the shadows or not given a proper
chance to get into "the mood" of Premier League, Puel will fail.
France and Portugal are countries with good leagues, but not at all
at the level of Premier League and to go out abroad and sign players
without any experience from the English game could be a heavy risk,
as we have seen in previuos deals done at the club.
Pereira is just 24 years of age and if he manage to become a first
teamer at the club it could be a fantastic signing, but what will
now happen with Daniel Amartey and Danny Simpson. The two must
clearly get the idea that they might be on the way out.
Simpson and Amartey are under contract for a few more years. Simpson
contract expires in the summer of 2019. Amartey is contracted until
the summer of 2020, so you would expect to see at least one of them
The signing of Pereira is a clear signal that Puel is ready to move
forward. The big question is, will any player signed for City ever
be as good as Danny Simpson to defend, which is the most important
for a right back.
Simpson is clearly one of the best right-back's in the Premier
League defensively, lacking the quality needed to go forward as well
as many would have liked, but never underestimate his fantastic
abillity to defend.
Pereira is a signing that makes tcf a bit uncertain, but again of
course wish the new player all the best. Leicester City is a club
with too many players and they need to find the right pattern and
Pereira is in the Portugal World Cup squad and of course great to be
able to follow the player during the days in Russia. He has only
played three full international games since his debut in 2015.
