A major move missed by Leicester City, never a chance after Euro success

Leicester City are seeking a permanent solution in a flank position and one player that has not featured in the rumour mill this summer is Emil Forsberg. The RB Leipzig flank man had a glorious Euro’s with Sweden winning their group and probably a bit better than expected.

Emil Forsberg scored four of their goals and was Sweden’s most prolific player during the tournament being the difference between a win, draw or a loss. He was earlier and a year ago linked to Leicester City with a move that at this point would have looked as a steal.

The reason for his absence might have to do with the fact that Forsberg is contracted to his club until the summer of 2025, agreeing a new deal in May this year. Probably not seen as a potential transfer target with so many years left of his newly signed deal.

Sweden reached the last 16 in the finals of the Euro’s losing to Ukraine with Forsberg scoring four goals along the way and also netting one of those in that last game. His presence was fantastic and being hailed as the star of the team and taking a grand role as Zlatan Ibrahimovic missed the tournament with an injury.

He is a player that has gone the route from being a bit on the fringe to become a star, with former Man City and Norwich defender Aage Hareide given a grand credit for his development. When Hareide took over at Malmo FF he made it certain that Emil Forsberg got the chance he deserved and the delivery from the former GIF Sundsvall midfielder was phenomenal, scoring 14 goals in that 2014 Allsvenskan breakthrough season, since then he has never looked back.

In a total of 62 caps to this date he has scored 13 goals in the national team, a great tally for a player that never did play at U.21 level for Sweden, and took his step into the international limelight a bit later than you would expect for such a major player.

Since joining RB Leipzig in 2015 he has been a key player and an instrumental one as his continuity is so vital to the Bundesliga sensation and also at the age of 29 probably seeing his career out at this club. Certainly a great player, a missed opportunity for Leicester City as the chase for a flank midfielder is heavily on but sadly this move will never happen.

The chase are at the moment involving a great number of flank midfield targets and you can as always get the latest updates on those rumours.
