Enzo Maresca is said to be close to agree his first signing as Leicester manager, bringing in Zach Steffen from Man City. A fee of £7million is said to be what it takes to get the shot stopper.
Steffen spent time on loan at Middlesbrough last season and could be a top signing, but still a surprise to see this coming with Daniel Iversen, Alex Smithies and Danny Ward all available and to be fear all of them proven players and good enough at Championship level.
The fact that the club also have four other goalkeepers on their books, makes this move look strange, if other options are not shown the door, but still all of them are on good long term deals.
Brad Young, Jacub Stolarczyk, Chituru Odunze and Arlo Doherty are four young goalkeepers in the U.21 set up. You need to balance the squad and get players shipped out before moving for a new goalkeeper as books must be balanced and clearly this move would just add another goalkeeper to the squad that has no real evidence of being a better alternative than what you have at the club at present
Zach Steffen got a lot of praise for his job at Middlesbrough during a loan spell last season, playing 42 games. He is also a full international for his nation USA with a total of 29 caps to his name so far. He is not a young man either, 28 years of age and one that of course is a good choice, but it looks strange as long as the squad is filled with so many other alternatives. He has not played for his country this year, but been a squad member, last included vs. El Salvador in March 2023.
Steffen at his age would clearly have been a first team alternative at Premier League level if he was a better goalkeeper than what Leicester have in Daniel Iversen, Danny Ward and Alex Smithies. One or two of these players needs to move on to avoid a total mess.
We do believe that Enzo Maresca will manage to get a good clear out before adding too many new faces and not continue the chaos created by Brendan Rodgers, missing his focus on good squad logistics.
