Leicester will play one of their 2024-25 pre-season games at the Chesterfield arena, SMH Group Stadium. They will face Italian side Palermo in a friendly on the 26th of July. Chesterfield FC has a proud history nursing forward some fantastic players, one of them, Gordon Banks.

Among those former players in both camps, you have names such as Rod Fern, Carl Muggleton and Stan Milburn. Simon Grayson and Martin Henderson are others, both played an important part in Leicester promotion campaigns in the past.

Bristol Rovers will next season continue their journey in League One, ending 15th last season. We have looked up previous players and other names in football that has a life in both camps, Leicester and Bristol Rovers.

Ian Holloway had a number of good years at the club, both as player and manager. He played for The Pirates in three rounds, first from 1980 to 1985 (111/15), then returning in 1987, playing until 1991 (179/26). His last and final period at the club was from 1996 to 1999 (107/1), serving first as player manager and until 2001, building a reputation in the game, giving him a lot of special moments in management, also having a stormy short period at Leicester, seeing them relegated to League One.

A few years before Ian Holloway took charge, Dennis Rofe was the manager at Bristol Rovers, from October 1991 to November 1992. Ray Graydon has also been in both camps, as a player and manager at Bristol Rovers, at Leicester he was in a coaching capacity.

Looking at the list of players to have had a life at Leicester and Barnsley, you have several with a special bond in both camps. Harvey Barnes had one his early loan spells at the club, and surely one to have in mind. Allan Clarke also becomes one special to remember as the former English transfer record man both to and from Leicester, became a player manager at Oakwell in the late seventies, bringing Barnsley up and forward reaching the second tier. Clarke played 47 league games for Barnsley, scored 15 goals from 1978 to 1980.

Matty James had a successful loan spell at Barnsley in 2017 playing 18 league games, he returned for a second spell in the 2020/21 season, playing 15 league games for The Tykes, adding the total up to 33, scoring 1 goal in that first spell.

The legendary Ernie Hine, from the league runners-up team in the 1928-29 season, started and finished his league career at Barnsley, playing a total of 288 league games and scoring 123 goals for the club. During his six years at Leicester, he completed 247 league games and scored 148 goals. He also had spells at Huddersfield and Manchester United.
