Leicester 2, Burnley 2, positives and negatives, player ratings and match report, FA Premier League fixture

This was a must win for Leicester and with a number of the new signings in the line-up from start you had high hopes of a good result. Suomare, Bertrand, Vestergaard and Lookman were all part of the starting eleven as they all became part of several action points in the game.

Leicester started well and it looked very convincing, with a type of pressure that surely would lead to goals, this crash landed just after 12 minutes when Jamie Vardy must have scored his first own goal for the club, from a corner.

Before that happening Jannik Vestergaard showed great struggle with Burnley forward Matej Vydra who out run him with the Czech republic international being difficult to handle. Despite those struggles Leicester pushed on and seeing Jamie Vardy scoring a goal in the Burnley net was much more pleasing as the equalizer went in behind Pope.

But as hope came back another Burnley player making a big impression today new signing Maxwell Cornet showed great quality and his goal in the 40th minute was a beauty and hammered Leicester fans hard as we again experienced sloppy defending and just a few minutes after the equalizer.

Burnley were the leaders at half time and they had one mission going into the 2nd, defending with every toe in the team, as they stepped back and let Leicester get the possession.

We all could see how Leicester struggled to break down the Burnley defense with most players behind the ball, but still also showing that treath being able to concern Leicester with good counter attacks that exposed a bit of Leicester’s defending problems.

Kasper Schmeichel didn’t really have a great game either failing a few times and also showing sloppy distrubution of the ball at times and instead of doing it simple trying out his skills and missing those crucial passes at that time in the game he could just play the ball as far as possible.

When Leicester finally managed to break down Burnley with a clever pass from Kelechi Iheanacho to Jamie Vardy who again became the vital man for Leicester, scoring nicely on the floor and 2-2 happened in the 85th minute.

Of course tempting to go for another towards the end, but instead Burnley was only stopped by VAR to not being handed all three points with a Chris Wood goal disallowed for offside.

Burnley only picked up their 2nd point of the season and with the pressure Leicester had it should really have been a comfortable win instead of a massive struggle for goals and a stressed team not really in any form of balance.

Ademola Lookman again showed strength but he should sit down and have a chat with Jamie Vardy as he do have a problem in his game not really being able to finish his good attempts with a result as he has struggled with that at Everton, Fulham and RB Leipzig, not really seen as the main man when the game is in a vital situation and a completion must be happening, this can be the be or not to be for Lookman in his career and going forward with Leicester.

The team do have qualities, but at the moment a number of vital questions to be asked as there are doubts about a number of issues from injuries to contracts being signed.

To pick up a point today was two less than expected.

  • Positives
    • Coming back twice after being a goal down
    • Lookman fresh and working on
    • Jamie Vardy scoring two, still very vital
    • Kelechi getting a nice assist on the second goal

    • Letting in an early goal after have much possession
    • Vestergaard pace struggles
    • Schmeichel distribution of the ball at vital times in the game
    • Almost losing all points just seconds before the game end
    • Ndidi not really at his best, showing lack of passing skills
    • Not able to create enough clear chances with so much possession

Leicester are in a bit of limbo at the moment and messing up could see major concern, look at Pep and Man City for correct answers

Brendan Rodgers does like to have a group of not more than 20 players to chose from but at the moment he is in a risk of destroying talent and send players out to dry with concerns regarding Patson Daka, Kelechi Iheanacho and Jannik Vestergaard probably just being players on the fringe, that cannot last much longer.

Either you start a massive rotation system or you start to ship out players that you cannot find a place to, signing players for the future will never work as they are all getting to their best level by playing week in and week out, sitting out games will never be good and it will just stop your progress.

To see a number of players shipped out over the summer was no surprise as their game time in the first team at Leicester would have been very limited. Dennis Praet, Kamal Sowah and Rachid Ghezzal all departed and have found new clubs in Torino, Brugge and Besiktas.

We also did see Wes Morgan and Christian Fuchs moving, but to see new faces not really signed to go straight into the first team could be money thrown out of the window as Brendan Rodgers needs to use a different formula going forward, trying to sort out how he will progress.

You need to have players available who are capable of playing two games a week during the season and not really being much bothered about them getting tired. If you look at Man City and Chelsea especially they do manage to keep this flouting without having a grand group of players to rotate.

You will see the key players in there two games a week as they are getting the rest needed to be fresh midweek and weekends during a season, that must also be what Brendan Rodgers will be looking at and not rest players in games and believe that he can water out and still get results.

A big problem for Brendan Rodgers is the situation regarding Jonny Evans, probably his most important player at the moment struggling heavy with injuries and his age is working against him, so BR need to decide on what he will do, you cannot sit around and wait anymore as Jannik Vestergaard also will be seeking answers and of course at this moment nice to have alternatives, but long term, players will need to play and get the game time they deserve, a decission must be made about Evans very soon.

In the midfield area Sammy Braybrooke is looking as a player that could be introduced to first team action this season. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall cannot just be played in the EFL Cup, with Hamza Choudhury and Papy Mendy probably looking for an early exit in January.

The loan signing of Ademola Lookman looks exciting but what will then happen to Marc Albrighton and Ayoze Perez. Both players will be under great treath from Lookman and could be seeing the bench more often, and again time will be against especially Marc Albrighton.

Brendan Rodgers needs to consider the following, first of all, what is my strongest 11, what is the best system suited and who are my 18 best players. When that is done, you should also be able to keep a carrot for those in the academy set up so they know working hard can see them as first team alternatives and also get a feeling of being involved and close to an oppertunity. If you ignore that key in your work as manager you will never get your hands on the best recruits and they will go to other clubs.

We certainly would like to see BR reducing the squad of first team alternatives down to 18 players, send the rest out on loan or going for complete sales as academy graduates must be seen as possible alternatives if injury strikes. To believe that you need three players to cover each position in a first team will not be the ideal plan going forward.

TCF belive the following should be the squad,

Goalkeepers: Schmeichel, Ward
Defenders: Castagne, Justin, Fofana, Pereira, Souyuncu, Thomas
Midfield: Tielemans, Ndidi, Soumare, Braybrooke,
Forwards: Daka, Iheanacho, Perez, Vardy, Barnes, Lookman

TCF believe that picking a starting eleven from these 18 players will be the only correct thing to do and as we have seen at Man City they do put younger players on the field and use their academy graduates frequently for cover if a first team player is out of play.

Sadly, at this moment, Leicester do have too many players either equal in quality or just being left as fringe alternatives, this will not be working well over time as a rotation of them will just see a weaker eleven week in and week out.

Of course harsh to make such drastic cuts in a player squad. But if you as a manager cannot secure first team action for most of your players and know that you cannot rotate too much to get results, you are stuck and will get into a very difficult dilemma going forward, then you need to gamble to get as high as possible in the table and have 18 players you believe in and if crises occur then giving one or two youngsters a chance on the bench, that would not be a problem.

Players such as Vestergaard, Amartey, Benkovic, Dewsbury-Hall, Choudhury, Mendy, Albrighton, Jakupovic, Bertrand, Evans and Maddison will not accept to be sitting out most games over more than a season and you cannot hold them back as they will seek other options and to try to sign covers for fringe players is a bit of a bingo, so this is the way forward, building a stronger and more smaller squad unit.

Schmeichel and Ward are goalkeeper alternatives, if one of them gets injured surely U.23 alternatives Young or Stolarczyk will be more than capable of sitting on the bench. In the back four with Fofana and Justin still out, Castagne can cover in the center and play alongside Soyuncu. Pereira and Thomas will be the the full back alternatives. Soumare, Tielemans and Ndidi will be a great midfield, Braybrooke and Perez can go in and do a job if needed. Up front you need a bit of alternatives and with this set up Daka and Iheanacho both wold be more considered to play as you can alternate a bit with other players.

At the moment BR will just see his team getting weaker and weaker watering out the game time available for each player in this massive squad.

Burnley will visit Leicester tomorrow as the two teams comes up against each other in the sixth round of the Premier League season, games will come thick and fast for Leicester with EFL Cup and Europa Leauge also on the schedule

Date: 25.09.21, Venue: King Power, Match: Premier League

Burnley did see their manager commit himself to a new long deal and that might be the most encouraging news coming from Turf Moor lately as the team on the field are not in the best of shapes with only one point to show so far this season.

This is of course a huge banana skin for Leicester and with three defeat and two wins to show so far this is a must win game for Brendan Rodgers who cannot afford any form of points loss in this game. Everything else that a win would be a massive blow.

Backpass

Looking back at previous meetings there of course a lot to pick, but a very memorable moment comes from a game back on the 17th of November 1973, a game that was live on telly in Scandinavia with a certain Mike Stringfellow one of the goalscorers, the other one was Len Glover.

Both clubs have over a period of time been a bit up and down between the tiers of the league with Burnley spending a number of years at level three and four, before getting back into the two above tiers in the last two decades and finally getting back to Premier League action in 2009/10 with that happening as a massive surprise, the relegation did happen after that first season back.

A bit of a restrutcture, Sean Dyche coming in, and finally getting back up in 2014/15 and with patience and not pannicking when again the team was relegated. Dyche managed to get the team back to the top flight and from 2016 been in the best party.

Leicester picked up four points from the the previous two meetings last season, winning at home and then see a draw away at Turf Moor. The last time Burnley did win this clash at Leicester you have to go back to 2007 when the two teams met in tier two and a goal from Andy Gray seperated the two teams.

Shop – Burnley

Leicester do have the upper hand at home and as we did say before, we believe in a win, but of course playing Burnley at this point in the season would probably see them laying low and defending looking for that single chance and as we know previous LCFC man Chris Wood could score from one chance.
