Listening to a recent interview of Ivan Toney, you get surprised to hear what he have to say about his early life in football and that he was rejected at the age of 15, the club in question, Leicester City.
This happened during the days of Nigel Pearson, Steve Walsh and Craig Shakespeare, so really surprised to see them let Ivan Toney slip.
He was picked up by Northampton Town and getting his EFL debut with The Cobblers. He later made a move to Newcastle United, playing just two league games during his time at St. James Park. He spent three years with The Magpies and added up a grand number of games on loan at Barnsley, Scunthorpe, Wigan and Shrewsbury.
He made his next move in 2018, moving to Peterborough United. This was a lucky move and he developed to become a forward in demand, scoring 40 goals in 76 league games with The Posh. Then his breakthrough at Brentford moving there in 2020, to date 111 league appearances and 63 goals.
Ivan Toney took step by step and Gareth Southgate gave him his England debut in March this year, coming on as a sub vs. Ukraine. Then his betting problems from the past gave him a ban for several months, working on his return.
The 26 year old will be one chased by a number of clubs when the January transfer window appear, with Chelsea said to have an interest.
Strange to see him telling his story and being turned down by Leicester City. What a massive mistake to do and how was it possible? looking at the forwards they had in the academy at the time, they are so far from Toney’s level that you cannot really imagine.
