Back in 1991, Leicester had a long life behind them in the second tier of English football. Suddenly, they found themselves in a situation they did not like. They were fighting for their lives all the way into the last game of the season.

A long time ago, 35 years to be exact. Leicester had David Pleat in charge. He was a manager with a good track record. He stayed at the club for a number of seasons but struggled. Consequently, he was sacked earlier in that 1990-91 season.

Leicester were not seen as a relegation fighter that season. However, they somehow dragged themselves into this situation. There was a lot of wrongdoing. They did not find the balance and rhythm needed to get these players on a better route.

It all came down to this last game at home to Oxford. Tony James scored the only goal in the game. His efforts did see Leicester survive in the second tier. David Pleat had left his post earlier in the season. First team coach, Gordon Lee took over in an interim capacity. On the day in this vital game vs. Oxford, Leicester fielded the following team. Martin Hodge in goal. Steve Walsh, Tony James, Tony Spearing and Ali Mauchlen, in the defence. The midfield had Paul Reid, Gary Mills, Tommy Wright and Kevin Russell. Up front David Kelly and Marc North. Paul Ramsey was subbed on for Ali Mauchlen in the second half.

There were some good players in that line-up. However, the team lacked balance. The team did not have a special and far from expected shape and form. Players were often switched around and played out of position. Certain qualities lacking, but still some good and special players involved.

Tony James was a bright young prospect in this team. His special goal never allowed him any chance to be part of the new setup under Brian Little. Brian Little arrived to take over from Gordon Lee.

Brian Little made a lot of changes early on. He kept just a few of the players in the line-up, securing that vital win vs. Oxford. Little came for the lower league club Darlington. He took with him three players from The Shakers. Gary Coatsworth, Jimmy Willis and Michael Trotter were not the towers in this team. However, they had a say. For some reason, they became part of a group pushing for promotion.

Energy level has a major say, mind set is also a key issue. Players look to the future. They do not see their time at the club as a closed chapter. This is massive when you build a team.

Leicester managed to climb back to become a promotion challenger. Then they played in three play-off finals, winning that last one in 1993-94.

Another fun fact is the name, Tony James. The Tony James playing and scoring that vital goal vs. Oxford is not the same Tony James that has a son named Jordan James. Jordan James father also had a career in lower league football. Both Tony James’s played for Hereford, both centre-backs, the rest is just very different.

The players in that team in 1991 moved on one by one. Steve Walsh became a hero at this football club. He lasted the longest among his teammates. He left during the 00/01 season. The goalkeeper Martin Hodge made his last appearance in this game.

Tony Spearing was also on the pitch for the last time for Leicester. Tony James played on for three more seasons, leaving in 1994. Injuries made it difficult for him to be a regular. The previous European Cup winner Gary Mills also played on to 1994.

Kevin Russell had one more season. He played in the play off final vs. Blackburn. Marc North as Tony Spearing and Martin Hodge, never played for Leicester after the Oxford game. Tommy Wright as Kevin Russell had one more season and played in the play-off final vs. Blackburn. David Kelly left the club in the middle of the next season. Newcastle paid £250.000 for his services.

Just as Steve Walsh, both Ali Mauchlen and Paul Ramsey were two long servant players. They had been there since the relegation from the top flight in 1987. Ramsey played his last game vs. Oxford. Mauchlen continued to play in that first season under Brian Little, making his last appearance for Leicester in March 1992.

The last player in the team and in this round up was Paul Reid. He also continued and played on under Brian Little, but not for very long. He joined Bradford on loan in February 1992. Making the move permanent to Valley Parade the following summer.
