Leicester made a solid impression in the FA Cup 3rd round fixture, winning 3-2 vs. Millwall away at The Den. A difficult hurdle to climb, and never an easy task as Millwall fought back, and kept Leicester on their toes until the very end of stoppage time.
The 4th round draw was one to be pleased about, either playing Hull or Birmingham at home. Both those teams are beatable and could take Leicester to the 5th round with a possible quarter final in sight.
Looking back to the last time Leicester were a 2nd tier team and reached the final of this tournament, you also had a path of teams to beat before the final.
Leicester played Birmingham in the 3rd round. The Blues were a top tier clubs at the time and Leicester fought hard over three games before being able to get through to the 4th round. Preston came next, also in the top tier, the 2nd tier Luton was the opponent in the 5th round. Leicester drew 5-5 at Kenilworth Road, and later winning 5-3 at home, in the replay, to get into the quater finals.
The quarter finals was a clash with Brentford, they were playing in the 2nd tier as Leicester, and in that league season ending in an 18th position, the place above Leicester. Brentford were at home, but Leicester won the game 2-1, goals from Jack Lee and Mal Griffiths.
Leicester came up against Portsmouth in the semi-final, and few gave Leicester any chance against the major club in England at the time, as Pompey in that same season won the league for the first time.
A fantastic achievement, and Leicester met another giant of that era, Wolves, in the final. The fact their best player, Don Revie, got hospitalized and had no chance to play, made it almost impossible against Billy Wright and his team mates as Wolves won the clash 3-1.
Leicester as a top flight club has been in the finals four times after 1949, and of course winning the major trophy in 2021, with that fantastic Youri Tielemans goal vs. Chelsea.
Would be fantastic to see how far the best team in the Championship can do in this seasons cup run going forward.
