It has taken a while to see the confirmation of the actual move between Leicester and Chelsea for Enzo Maresca. Yesterday Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the delay is just a formality and will be sorted out with a €10million compensation fee to be paid to Leicester.
Then we move on to the list of candidates to take over at Leicester. Recent reports has seen the list of candidates changing and those mentioned moving up and down the list, as information thrown in from here and there.
One reason for this is of course announcements of other clubs either coming close or have confirmed their new man in charge. The list of candidates do circles around a core group of names with a certain Ruud Van Nistelrooy being mentioned as the hottest candidate at this time.
Watching the different fan channels of information you see different aspects of an appointment being rated. One say that you absolutely need a manager with Premier League experience. A reminder to them is that the most succesfull managers at Leicester, over time, did not have that with them in the bag when becoming managers of this club. Enzo Maresca has no experience from that either, so strange to see that as a mantra.
Matt Gillies, Jimmy Bloomfield, Jock Wallace, Brian Little, Martin O’Neill and Nigel Pearson had a good track record as Leicester managers, and sat as Leicester managers while in the top flight, without having a top flight management history from before. They had all experienced the top flight as players or as an assistant, so in a way that experience was on board in some capacity.
The situation Leicester are in, with a possible points deduction between 6 and 15 points, you cannot really pick from the top shelf of names. David Moyes and Graham Potter looks far from realistic, as they might be looking for an easier challenge, at least taking a club who are starting out without minus. Steve Cooper, previously with Nottingham Forest, is a rising man in the list of candidates, and besides Ruud Van Nistlerooy being the favourite at this point. Carlos Corberan is the one that was mentioned first, and still rides high. He could fit this picture as the ideal candidate, as the former Leeds and Bielsa assistant, has been the one on the table from start.
