Transforming Leicester City Fans: Lessons To Learn From Borussia Dortmund

After being a Leicester City fan for more than 50 years, it’s difficult to understand the current situation. Certain areas of the Leicester City fanbase behave badly. They act very strangely towards players and the new manager. Some even send abusive messages. They look very much as something far from being part of a fanbase. No unity, no spirit, nothing, just complains and negativity.

Certain fans and vocal voices behave as if they are above the club. They believe they are more important and act arrogant. They just shout out whatever they feel is needed to justify their points.

I was present at the Sheffield Wednesday game. Easy to understand Wout Faes, Harry Winks, and Jannik Vestergaard. They are all good professional footballers. They have full caps for their countries. For those sitting in the stands talking negative and booing, you should have a clever look at yourself.

You should all take a trip to Germany. Go to a couple of Borussia Dortmund games. Learn how to behave as a football fan. Start supporting your team all the way. Don’t support just when the chips are up.

In Germany you have the expression, Zwölfter Mann. This is of course the fanbase on a matchday, being part of the game and build a great atmosphere. We all know Leicester fans can be that voice. What we experienced during the great escape season and the pl winning season after, was electric. Being in the stands at the stadium during those two seasons was magic. It was loud and fantastic.

I was with the Borussia Dortmund fans on a game in Norway, standing behind their goal. Their team were 3-0 down after 22 minutes. Instead of moaning, booing or leaving, they just continued to support their team load and clear, using their drums loader and loader. No doubt in their mind. In the end their team had fought well and won 4-3.

This is what support should be. What we experienced last season from certain areas of the Leicester fanbase was a disgrace. It’s not support; it’s the total opposite. This makes it difficult to stand together. This mob with certain opinions will ruin this club from the inside. It cannot continue. Another group of fans needs to stand up and be positive. If not, you will just take this club down with you. An evil spiral.

There are children in the stands. They are the future of this football club. In the next 20 years, they will be the ones to trust. What they experience at the moment must be difficult. We should not tolerate what we had to listen to at home to Sheffield Wednesday. Booing players when they enter the field is unacceptable. We should single out these individuals. They should have a chance to explain themselves in front of the players they have a problem with.

We met Wout Faes after the game. We talked to him and thanked him for the goal. He won us the match. A hero and now also a friend. A great person and individual. He has worked hard to get where he is today. He plays regularly for his national team. He is also a top professional footballer. People talking the opposite has no clue of what this is all about. He has no obligation to act humble, what a lot of rubbish. Players should not be humble towards abusive fans. They should not accept that behavior. It applies even more when someone clueless criticizes. These fans have no clue, no understanding, what it takes to become a professional footballer.

Disgraceful to see comments also after the Preston game. Yes, you are allowed to have your say after the game. You can also talk your talk. However, Leicester were close to getting a positive result. A certain Daniel Iversen blocked that opportunity for Abdul Fatawu.

To see everything going wrong being blamed on Jon Rudkin is all laughable and major bs. Listening to it is very difficult. It shows you have no idea what football management is. You have no clue about recruitment methods. You cannot address something that should be taken into account.

If you do not like Leicester City, have no positive to say about the players, the board, owners, management or anything at all. Just stay away, go home, find something else to do. You will never see Leicester City winning every game in a season, that will never happen.

The recent message from Abdul Fatawu is a strong one. This should not be taken lightly. Not often players are forced to go out this way.

I have also seen comments saying that fans have the right to complain and be negative. Of course, they can be. However, they need to understand their behaviour and how others will react. This will not be taken as a positive and just make the atmosphere worse. So please understand your negative actions.

We need the fearless, those who never quit and are keeping the faith. If you have no interest of following those words, then stay away, be at home, we do not need you. No individual fan is bigger than the club, remember that. If you have trouble to unite, then move on. Start supporting another team. Go botanic or become a vegetarian. Find yourself another hobby.

What is going on in the stands at the moment must stop. This is a disgrace and disturb other loyal fans, staff, players, owners, and management. It cannot continue. We as Leicester City fans have an obligation to support the team, not the opposite.
