Sammy Braybrooke joined Newport on loan for the first half of this football season. He has shown great promise, and put in great performances, despite playing for a relegation fighting team in League Two. The young Leicester City loanee has shown his ability, returning to his best after difficult times in the past.

He has earlier been loaned out to Dundee in Scottish Premiership. He has also captained England sides at different youth levels.

His time at Dundee was not a happy stay. He was placed on the bench most of the time. He only appeared in 7 league games. The young man has been with Leicester for a long time. Braybrooke signed professional terms for Leicester in February 2022.

He was first named in the Leicester City match day squads in October 2022. He was a sub for Premier League matches. At the time, he captained the England under-19 team. He regularly appeared for Leicester City’s under-23 team. He was also on the substitutes bench in the UEFA Europa League.

Braybrooke made his professional debut on 8 November 2022 in the EFL Cup against Newport County. Braybrooke played the second half in the 3-0 win. In February 2023, he had a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury and was out for a long period of time.

He looks fully recovered at this point. So far played 17 league games and scored two goals during his loan stay at Newport. Christian Fuchs took charge of the Newport team a few weeks ago. He has made no secret about keeping Sammy Braybrooke for the rest of the season.

We all know League Two is not The Championship, but the progress of the 21 year old is astonishing. He has been consistent and delivered top performances in all games. His goal from long range vs. Colchester was a clear beauty. In his latest game, Braybrooke showed his effort with a top performance. He also scored one of the goals in the 2-0 win vs. Crewe.

Leicester are not short of players in the defensive midfield department. Braybrooke is at this point behind Oliver Skipp and Hamza Choudhury in quality. Bouba Soumare is also a player who can cover the defensive midfield area. We will not see a fire sale at Leicester in January. Harry Winks is the one midfield player we believe can be shipped out, maybe Bouba Soumare. The clear option for Sammy should be to stay where he is at the moment and progress at Rodney Parade. He will be crucial for Newport and Christian Fuchs in their battle for League 2 survival. The former England U 19 captain must keep playing games every week. That will surely be the best option at this point.
