Marti Cifuentes left Leicester in January. He is back in Norway and in this recent podcast, talking to Viaplay about his journey and new projects to explore. On a direct question from Viaplay expert and former Wimbledon assistant manager Lars Tjernaas, Marti is asked about his future and the fact that Rosenborg are without a manager, and if he will be open to speak to them. He answers, he will open to such an approach, and of course interested in that type of position.
Rosenborg is still a club in the Norwegian top flight, but their total domination of Norwegian football is long gone. They are struggling at the moment at the wrong part of the table.
Former Norwich player, Alex Tettey is in temporary charge, taking over from former head coach Alfred Johansson who left this club a couple of weeks back after a disastrous start to the season.
We have heard Marti Cifuentes speaking with media earlier on about his time at Leicester and how he believed he had done his job. He believed he was given too little time and that he needed a couple of transfer windows to get everything correct, but still the decline, continued under his managerial period.
His track record in Scandinavia is totally different. First he had spell at Swedish club AIK, being in charge of their academy. Sandefjord, known for appointing far from A4 candidates, snapped him up, as he completely changed the enviorenment at the club and build a modern and more proffesional platform.
He left Sandefjord in good shape. He decided to jump to a new adventure in Denmark, with Aab Aalborg, also doing well in the Danish Superliga. Then he returned to Sweden, and explored new opportunities with Hammarby, before being approached by Queens Park Rangers.

It will be nice to hear Marti Cifuentes talk about Leicester while in the studio for the upcoming Premier League games. Marti do have close connections to Sandefjord and Norway, and also to Rosenborg. Their former head coach of Rosenborg, Alfred Johansson is a good friend, having worked together in the past. Marti Cifuentes is often back here in Sandefjord.
Lars Tjernaas believed Rosenborg should not overlook Marti Cifuentes and speak to him about their vacant head coach position. If that job is approachable for him it will be one of the toughest and he will be facing even more challengig fanbase, “Kjernen”. Translated to English “The Core”.
Rosenborg has dominated Norwegian football for 30 years, qualifying for the Champions League 11 times, including a notable victory against AC Milan at The San Siro. They have won the Norwegian top-flight league title 26 times and the Norwegian Football Cup 12 times. Their achievements include: League Titles (Eliteserien): 26 (last in 2018) Cup Titles (NM Cup): 12 (last in 2018) The Double: They won both the league and cup in the same season 10 times (1971, 1988, 1990, 1992, 1995, 1999, 2003, 2015, 2016, 2018).
In this recent podcast talk with Viaplay, Cifuentes talks about his experiences in football and his time at Leicester. He also shares his views on the SpyGate situation, stating that he does not support such ideas, but also agreeing that this spy is not among the best and among the worst ever seen. Marti believe Southampton is the favourite to get back up, but politly also believe Hull can win, being the lucky team in the end.
Marti Cifuentes has been in different media channels recently, in one interview he said, he was keen on a return to Leicester, for a second chance to take them out of League One. Nigel Pearson previously made a return to Leicester, but if Marti is to take the u-turn, hopefully he would not copy, Davide Nicola (Salernitana): In January 2023, Nicola was sacked by the Serie A club following a humiliating 8-2 defeat to Atalanta. Just 48 hours later, after calling the club president to plead his case, he was sensationally rehired. In a chaotic twist, he was sacked again only 31 days later.
He spoke also about Leicester. The job was to get the team into the play-off’s. The restrictions and no money available. He was sad to leave, and pointing out that he was 100% certain he would have saved Leicester from the drop, even with 6 points deducted, something he did not mention. He also said, he knew what was coming, but he has no regret and any grief to anyone at this football club.
Marti Cifuentes is a person that will not be out of the game for very long, having a good and respected coaching background in Scandinavia. The Rosenborg job is mentioned, but other positions will see his profile as one very interesting, so believe he is soon back in an exciting job and a new challenge.
