Brendan Rodgers overlooked Viktor Johansson as the Swedish goalkeeper was let go and released from Leicester back in 2020. He had delivered steady performances for the U.23’s over a couple of seasons, but still not rated as a possible first team candidate at the club.
He joined Rotherham and in his first season seeing relegation, but helped the club back to a straight promotion and this season been among the better goalkeepers in the Championship, helping secure a place in the division also next season ending 19th.
His performances has been noticed back in his home country Sweden as he was included in their national teams squad for their games in March, and with more improvement could be close to a full international debut.
Robin Olsen is the preferred first choice, but with him being mostly on the bench at Aston Villa this season and in the past seen as a journeyman in football, and at an age that could see him as one to challenge.
Viktor Johansson has a good reptuation in Sweden, being picked for U.17, U.19 and U.21 selection in the past, and if he grabs a possible oppertunity in the future, Leicester could have missed out on a talent that can be a major sale from Rotherham if the progress continues.
His stats are special and he looks a steal when you know that he joined Rotherham on a free, but as we all know, you cannot keep them all, and some will get away, but surely talent must be seen and a loan spell out could have given him time to settle and seen him as a possible first team challenger.
He has this season taken steps as he was not a certain first choice when joining and kept out of the side at times, so to see this happening is great news.
We wish Viktor Johansson all the best on his journey and we believe he will soon be a full international goalkeeper, with Sweden coach Janne Andersson under pressure to make changes in their squad.
