Today’s news about Hamza Choudhury and his supposed drink driving, will be a difficult matter to handle for Leicester manager Enzo Maresca. Choudhury (26) was just handed an extension to his contract, signing a deal lasting to June 2027.
Reports say Hamza Choudhury was charged on Friday, but few or no one at the club must have known anything about it, since he was in the starting line-up yesterday vs. Ipswich.
So far no official statement, neither any local news updates, but still very much a news story in the national press. Hopefully we will see more updates from official sources soon.
To see such headlines is not just demaging to the club, but also bad news for the player himself. He was described as a “leader” or one “growing into becoming one” by manager Enzo Maresca. He had been given the captains armband on occasions earlier in the season, and everyone had their best thoughts about him. Then to see Choudhury charged with drink driving in the middle of the football season, in a period with a busy match program, you have no answers to such a behaviour.
Last season Newcastle experienced the same when Joelinton was charged. Eddie Howe continued to play the Brazilian and it looked as it was overlooked as a problem. We certainly hope Leicester will set an example and do the total opposite.
If the player needs help, to deal with his problems, please give him support, but to see this happening during the football season is shocking, totally unaccaptable and should see him suspended.
Sad again to see such news regarding a Leicester player and a massive blow for Enzo Maresca handing him a lucrative new deal as he must have misjudged the potential and his character completely.
Leicester are now just eight points clear of Southampton in 3rd place. A lack of consistent performance over a full game, and with this news of Hamza Choudhury, you have a bit of ongoing happenings to deal with.
This is not the first time we see Hamza Choudhury getting headlines for non-footballing affairs, as he back in November 2023 posted a river to sea comment in social media.
We certainly hope Enzo Maresca will take action and not play Hamza Choudhury in the games coming up as his presence will not be of any benefit for anyone as long as this is an unsettled matter without any sort of completion.
