Leicester made it to the 5th round of the FA Youth Cup and we have seen in previous years that to go all the way has never been possible.
This season last years winners Aston Villa were beaten earlier on in the 3rd round and to pass the hurdle vs. Crewe shows that this team do have a chance.
Jack Butterfill scored the winner for Leicester. The young forward is born in 2004 and 17 years of age. Will Alves were on show vs. Watford in the FA Cup earlier and the 16 year old is a massive talent and against Crewe a driving force from the midfield area.
Leicester will play Bournemouth in the next round down on the south coast. A date is not yet set for the fixture but looking forward to more action as the young foxes hopefully will also pass this hurdle.
Leicester do have produced a number of great players form their youth set-up, but still never been a finalist of the FA Youth Cup. They came close in 2015, reaching the semi-finals, but Man City came out stronger, winning 5-1 on the day. The team was a strong unit with players such as Hamza Choudhury, Ben Chilwell, Harvey Barnes, Darnell Johnson, Josh Knight, Elliott Moore and Cedric Kipre who are all well established professional footballers today and as we have seen Barnes and Chilwell also being full England internationals.
Going through the list of former finalists and winners of the FA Youth Cup you do find a great number of former foxes on the list. Gordon Banks is well remembered for his heroic play for Chesterfield vs. Man Utd in 1955/56, two games that ended in 4-3 win for Red Devils.
Ron-Robert Zieler, Danny Drinkwater and Matty James are three former foxes and also winners of the FA Youth Cup when Man Utd in 2006/07 defeated Liverpool 2-1, Jay Spearing was in The Reds Line-up.
Another interesting game to look back on was the 2010/11 final between Manchester United and Sheffield United with Jesse Lingard, Michael Keane and Tom Lawrence in the Man Utd team and Harry Maguire playing for The Blades. Man Utd came out as 6-3 winners over two games.
The last fox to appear in a FA Youth Cup final is Vontae Dailey-Campbell playing for Arsenal vs. Chelsea in 2017/18, being heavily defeated 7-1 over two games.
The team vs. Crewe; Chibueze; Grist (Wilson-Brown 76’), Godsmark-Ford, B. Nelson; Wormleighton, Braybrooke (C), Cartwright, Lindsay, Cover (Butterfill 61’); Popov, Alves.
