To see Leicester getting into the semi’s of a European competition is a phenomenal act and how it was done makes it even more fantastic.
This is also a milestone for the club with the fact that Leicester have competed in all of the European main competitions from the first experience of the cup winners cup in 1961, uefa cup in 1997 and 2000, european cup (champions league) 2016, europa league 2020 and 2021 and still running in the europa conference league this season.
Among the players in the squad today a number of them are used to a semi-final and even finals from their past as we do remember Jonny Evans and Ryan Bertrand being in this situation and both do have medals from grand achievements in Champions League.
Other players to see the final stages of such grand tournaments are Kelechi Iheanacho, as part of Man City’s squad but not playing in the semi-finals in 2017. Last season Ademola Lookman’s club RB Leipzig reached the semi’s as well, but with AL at Fulham, on loan.
Jonny Evans and Ryan Bertrand are both winners in Europe with Man Utd and Chelsea, and their experience will be good, even if RB are not much involved on the field he might be important as a squad man. Brendan Rodgers is no novice in Europe either being involved many times, so it will of course be a new experience for the club and the majority of players, but still many of those involved will be able to look back on previous affairs.
Last season Harry Maguire appeared in the Europa League final against his former teammate at Leicester Vicente Iborra who was part of the Villareal squad. Harry Kane appeared in the Champions League final for Spurs a few years back and we all know that Gary Lineker also played in a European final with Barcelona.
Allan Clarke is a former European Cup finalist as well as Jon Sammels and George Armstrong. David Webb and Keith Weller are winners of the European Cup winners Cup with Chelsea and Peter Shilton won the European Cup twice with Nottingham Forest, as well as Gary Mills who was in the 1980 set up.
Esteban Cambiasso as we all know did win Champions League with Inter and Roberto Mancini is another european cup winner with Sampdoria and Lazio, both cup winners cup. Colin Gibson and Allan Evans are two former European Cup winners as well, with Aston Villa in 1982.
Riyad Mahrez and Ngolo Kantè as well as Ben Chilwell are also former foxes with the grand experience and David Nish did appear in the semi’s of the European Cup with Derby in 1973.
We do look forward to the match vs. Roma and hopes are that Leicester can jump another hurdle on their march towards a new top adventure and european dream.
