With only a handfull of senior appearances to his name up to that point, young central defender Malcolm assumed the first team No. 5 shirt at the beginning of 1973/74. and held it almost solidly until Jeff Blockley arrived a season and a half later, welding a rigit partnership with Graham Cross.
He helped City’s route to the FA Cup semi-finals. An England cap at school and youth levels, the slender and extremely sppedy defender actually did well to recover from the mishap of scoring an own goal on his 1973 break-through day.
He was less mature about howing patience when Blockley displaced him, walking out on his contract to emigrate to Canada. City retained his registration until July 1980, when it became evident he would not return.
He remains perhaps best remembered for the goal-line clearance wich saved City from going 0-3 down to Leatherhed in the 1975 FA Cup tie.
