A six foot, bullet domed central striker who made his First Division mark as a superb header of the ball. Andy had won one Scotland Under-23 cap in 1963 and gone on to amass more than a century of League goals for Burnley prior to his £80.000 move to Leicester.
Though he’d once totally frustrated a City attack when serving as a stand in centre half for the Clarets at Filbert Street, it was definitely his goal touch that the soon to depart Matt Gillies covered as City struggled in 1968/69, and which would help pave the way to Wembley during that season of contrasts.
Andy gloried in the headed Fifth Round Anfield winner, but rather muffed his Cup Final chance of greater kudos with a miscued shot over the bar from a fine position.
He started the following season with a quickfire goalspree, but couldn’t maintain the momentum, and after Frank O’Farrell let him move on to Villa Park, Andy proved unable to svae his new club from their embarrassing drop into the Third Division.
He did assist them in the League Cup Final in 1971, though, and then to promotion in 1972, and also prompted Oldham up to the Second in his initital season at Boundary Park. Andy Lochhead later coached the Latics and managed Padiham club stward back in the Burnley area.
He also tried his luck in NASL with Denver Dynamos. He played 20 games and scored 2 goals during the 1974 season playing alongside the Kaizer Moutang the founder of South African top club Kaizer Chiefs. Dave Worthington, the brother of Frank, was also in that DD setup at the time.
After his career in football he settled down in the Burnley area and has from time to time been seen in different columns and interviews telling his story about the 1969 FA Cup final as he a year before had watched the final in a local pub with a team mate and wondered how it would be to walk out on the field of that arena and play the final, a year later he was at the spot and talking about fond memories despite losing 1-0 to Man City.
