Wembley in reach but should we hope for more FA Cup success as previous winners from tier two never got promoted

Leicester fans will be excited to now what kind of opponent will be in the hat when tomorrows draw of the FA Cup quarter finals takes place.

We would like to get a draw, hopefully at home, against a team that is beatable, avoiding Liverpool and Man City as both of them will possibly be to hard to handle, but still Wembley is close.

Looking back at previous clubs to be fighting in finals and winning the FA Cup from a level below, West Ham are the latest winners, going all the way back to 1980 to find that happening, the 1-0 win vs. Arsenal.

The ugly part of it was that The Hammers that season ended 7th in the 2nd division, 8 points behind Leicester, winning the 2nd division that season.

Southampton and Sunderland are two other clubs that won the tournament from tier 2, in 1973 and 1976, none of them managed to win promotion, both clubs ending in a 6th position in the league that same season.

Leicester reached the FA Cup semi-final as a 2nd tier club in 1982, but the winners to be, Spurs, won 2-0 at Villa Park.

No team had won the 2nd tier since 1931, when Sunderland defated Leeds 1-0. 42 years had gone between the two events, if Leicester or another team from the 2nd tier would be able to make an achievement like that, you can count 44 years since it last happened, and the odds of that looks far and close to 5000/1.

To see Leicester doing a double would have been the ultimate scenario, with a showdown between Leicester and Man City, seeing Pep and Enzo coming up against each other, what a special day that would have been.
