Newly appointed Ajax manager Johnny Heitinga has taken drastic action to get rid of certain players in his squad. He has accordingly given seven players messages via WhatsApp that they are no longer part of long term plans.
Among this group is former EFL Championship top goalscorer Chuba Akpom. Akpom (29) used to play for Middlesbrough. He scored 28 goals in 40 league appearances during the 2022/23 season. Michael Carrick managed him during this time. Carrick is currently out of a job. He is linked with the vacant manager position at Leicester. He is believed to have been interviewed in the process of finding a new man when shifting Steve Cooper.
Chuba Akbom had Michael Carrick as his boss at Middlesbrough. He described the former England and MU midfielder a dream manager. Akpom was the EFL Championship’s top scorer with 28 goals in 40 league appearances. He also won the Player of the Year and the Players’ Player of the Year award in that season.
On 16 August 2023, Akpom signed for Ajax on a five-year contract set to expire in June 2028. He was signed for a transfer fee of €12.3m, potentially rising to €14.3m with add-ons. On 2 February 2025, Akpom moved on loan to Lille in France, with an option to buy. The former Arsenal attacker will now be available for a cut price. Hopefully, he is very eager to find a new club.
Michael Carrick has been seen as a potential man to take over at Leicester. He is currently available and one listed among the candidates seen in the list of potential candidates. He is according to Teeside Live, third favourite to take over the manager job at Leicester.

Leicester do need to balance out their squad. They have more than 40 players in their early pre-season squad. This number includes internationals who are yet to report back. This has mainly been the problem for the club. They have had major problems regarding the number of players present.
There are quality inside the camp. To get new faces in, a good number of players surely need to be shipped out. Yet a priority would be to get a first class striker signed, Chuba Akpom would fit the bill perfectly. We have spoken highly of him in an earlier article regarding JV9 replacements. His previous relationship with Michael Carrick would certainly fuel the rumours of him joining Leicester.
