Recent Happenings Regarding Leicester Relations in Football Management: News, Results, Points and Positions

When examining Leicester relations in football management, you have many former players and coaches involved both home and abroad. News a few days back told us the story of Alan Sheehan being sacked as Swansea manager. His time in charge lasted just six months. Sheehan has seen the lot in the perspective of league football. Sheehan earned his UEFA Pro Licence in June 2024.

Neil Lennon was appointed manager at Dunfirmline Athletic late last season. He saved the club from relegation. Currently, The Pars are fourth in the second tier (Scottish Championship). In their last game vs. league leaders St. Johnstone, they managed a strong 2-2 draw.

Martin O’Neill has stepped into an interim position at Celtic. He has seen three wins, two in SPL (Falkirk and Kilmarnock) and one in the League Cup (Rangers), but had to see defeat in the Europa League game vs. FC Midtjylland.

Steve Cooper has since taking over at Danish Superliga club Brondby in early September, done briliantly. Brondby are now second in the table, having Midtjylland just one point in front. Brondby have five wins an a draw in their last six outings. Brondby (2nd) will play FCK (4th) in the heavy Copenhagen derby on the 23rd of November.

Richie Wellens and his Leyton Orient are just above the relegation zone in League One. Two wins in the last three games have seen positive progress lately. Wellens took Leyton Orient to the League One play-off’s last season. This campaign has been a struggle so far.

Gary Rowett is in a struggle at the moment. In charge of Oxford United, far down in the Championship table. The O’s are just three points above the relegation zone, having Sheffield United behind them. Last seasons play-off finalist are expected to step out of this zone going forward.

Stoke made a wise decision when they last season decided to bring in Mark Robins. Last season was all about restructiring, this one has so far been brilliant. Stoke are currently third in the Championship table, just two points behind Middlesbrough in second.

Chris Davies with Ben Petty as his assistant are strolling on at Birmingham. They are currently 11th in the Championship. As a newly promoted side that must be rated as solid so far. They might have higher ambition. They were seen as a promotion contender. They are close on the play-off’s, so it can of course happen.

Brian Barry-Murphy looks to have good track at Cardiff City. Last seasons assistant manager at Leicester is currently fourth in the table with The Robins. A troubled start for Tom Cleverly at Plymouth this season. The Pilgrims are at the bottom of the League One table after 15 games. They have picked up just 13 out of a possible 45 points.

Ian Holloway is an experienced football manager, currently in charge of Swindon Town. Holloway (62) knows a bit about promotions and also relegations, with this campaign being about going up. Swindon are currently second in the League Two table. Swindon are also on track in cup competitions, going through in the FA Cup and the EFL Trophy with great away wins vs. MK Dons and Rotherham.

Cheltenham and Shrewsbury are two teams in other end of the League Two table. Both clubs having former Leicester related managers. Steve Cotterill, in charge of Cheltenham, used to be a coach at Leicester. Michael Appleton was previously assistant manager and interim manager at Leicester. He is having a difficult time at Shrewsbury Town. Cotterill also have been in charge of this club. Shrewsbury are second to bottom, Cheltenham third from bottom.

In October, David Nugent returned to playing after four years out. He joined Northern Premier League Division One Midlands club Anstey Nomads as player-coach. They are third in their league and in a play-off position after three strait wins.

Robbie Savage in charge of Forest Green Rovers, have good track on promotion. They are 3rd and in the play-off zone in National League. Two great wins vs. Aldershot and Tamworth do see them in good progress at the moment. They are just one point behind league leaders Carlisle.

In the same division Ashvir Singh Joval is struggling at Morecambe. The squad has a large number of former Leicester players. These players have higher league experience. Despite this, they are currently in a relegation position.

Rob Kelly was recently appointed assistant manager at Reading. They are currently in a lower middle position in League One. Kelly came in on the 3rd of November. The former Leicester manager is well connected. He has been in a number of assistant roles over the years both home and abroad.

Arnar Gunnlaugsson is the head coach of Iceland. They are currently second in their World Cup qualification group, behind France. A strong 2-0 away win to Azerbaijan on the 13th of November was their latest result. They will play Ukraine away in Warsaw Poland on the 16th.

The latest former Leicester related player, coach or manager to be announced with a new job is Roberto Mancini. The former Italian coach and Man City manager will take charge of Qatar club Al-Sadd.
