The next manager appointment at Leicester will be of great importance. We will expect twist and turns regarding candidates day by day as new information occur.
The excitement of such an appointment will see numbers of candidates being mentioned. This will go on for a while, with different candidates on a short list being contacted. Agents or media people sniffing around will pick up the information and bring it out in the open.
The name Darren Ferguson has turned up as a candidate. Ferguson is of course the son of Sir Alex, but also one that can be seen as a specialist in driving success at League One level. The 54 year old was sacked by Peterborough in October last season, following a 2–1 home defeat to Blackpool. That left the Posh bottom of the league with just ten points from thirteen matches.
During the 2023–24 season, Ferguson won his second EFL Trophy title, defeating Wycombe Wanderers in the final at Wembley. In the league, Peterborough finished fourth but lost the League One play-off semi-final to Oxford United. In the 2024–25 season, Peterborough failed to get promotion, but they became the first team to retain the EFL Trophy, beating Birmingham City in the final.

Darren Ferguson is at the moment the front runner in odds list of candidates. His odds are slashed to the ground. Being available and out of a job, it will be interesting to see if this appear to be the next manager appointment. Odds of 1/2 (fractional) are known as “odds-on” or “1-2” (one-to-two), indicating a strong favorite. You must bet (\$2) to win (\$1) in profit, plus your stake back. This implies a (66.67\%) probability of winning, where the potential return is less than the original stake.
Dick Shreuder mentioned earlier as a potential candidate is currently on 16/1. His name was put to the table by The Sun reporter Alan Nixon, but odds has since just gone in the wrong direction.
Gary Rowett looks totally out, not on the list at all.
Darren Ferguson’s management style is defined by a high-intensity, attacking philosophy, prioritizing flexible formations (often 3-4-1-2 or 4-2-3-1) tailored to opponents. He focuses on recruiting players with strong character and high work rates, fostering a close-knit culture, and emphasizes developing players’ skills while maintaining a direct, fast-paced style of play.
The son of Sir Alex has a past of promoting teams from the third tier, all happening at Peterborough. Darren Ferguson has achieved five promotions as a football manager during his career. He is most notably recognized for leading Peterborough United to four separate promotions, with three of those being from the third tier (League One) to the Championship.
If Darren Ferguson comes in he could bring with him Kevin Russell. Russell (59) has been Darren’s assistent at Peterborough in previous spells.
