Kolo Toure has finally been appointed manager at Wigan after it’s been no secret it would happen. He will take over from caretaker manager Rob Kelly who will step down, but still continue as assistant manager, to be part of the set up under Toure.
Rob Kelly had a similar situation at Leicester in the past, first being assistent to Craig Levein and later taking over, being in charge at Leicester from March 2006 to April 2007. He had a good start at Leicester, picking up 21 points of 30 possible in his first season, and one of a few managers to also have played for the club.
Kelly’s experience will of course be of importance to Kolo Toure who has been with Brendan Rodgers as a player and coach at Liverpool and Celtic and then moving to Leicester to just consentrate on his role as first team coach.
He has not been much in the limelight at Leicester and seldom seen making any interviews or much talk as he has kept himself the shadows of Brendan Rodgers.
Wigan is currently third from bottom in the Championship after winning promotion from League One last season. They were favorites for a quick return back down, but still at this point they are more than close enough to the teams above to avoid relegation.
This is of course the main focus for Toure and hopefully build from that when he makes his debut as a manager. Toure was part of a great run of results at Leicester, and surely had his points on that, so we just have to wait and see what Brendan Rodgers will do with his set up.
Kolo will be in charge of his first game on the 10th of December playing Millwall away at The Den. This is a difficult fixture against a team fliying high in the table, currently 6th, so no soft start.
Ashvir Johal will join the coaching team alongside Rob Kelly as Leicester relations are well in place. Johal has been with Leicester for the last eight years as part of academy set up, and worked under the management of Brendan Rodgers and picked by Kolo Toure to move a step up to first team affairs.
Best of luck to Kole Toure and we will see what type of moves Brendan Rodgers will do to cover up, with Lars Knudsen allready in place as a set-piece coach,
