24 year old Leicester defender Luke Thomas has signed a new four year deal. He has more or less for the last two seasons been the answer to that left back flank alternative. He played 14 games in Premier League last season. In this Championship season, he has been on the field in the left back position in every game.
He was a player Enzo Maresca send out on loan twice, not fitting his system of play. He spent half a season with Sheffield United in the Premier League. Later, he made a loan move to the Championship playing for Middlesbrough. A total of 24 league games, 12 each for those two parties in the 2023/24 season.
It’s been a stumbling career so far, but also one impressive. He has a winners medal from the FA Cup and also won the Euro’s with England U21. His route to first team football at Leicester has been a path of in and outs.
He is a local lad and what this club is all about, bringing forward young talent. Ben Chilwell genuinely gave Luke Thomas a chance to take over that left back role permanently. However, all his managers in charge so far, besides Marti Cifuentes, have gone for other alternatives. In some way, Luke Thomas has managed to bounce back and get his place in the first eleven.
He has shown he can cope with Premier League level and last season he kept Mo Salah quiet at Anfield. He has also shown promising play frequently against tall opposition. But he has also made a slip or two. These slips have given him long resting periods on the bench. He has even spent time in the terraces.

On his best days, you start to believe he could be an alternative for Thomas Tuchel and England. On other days, he looks far from that. This season can be his breakthrough. Marti Cifuentes has given him loads of confidence. Hopefully, this will result in a more long term fluid form.
We are hoping he will take that step into the England full squad. Thomas Tuchel has no real answer to the left back position. Luke Shaw is not getting younger and he often struggles with injuries. Hopefully Luke Thomas will take this opportunity and build on his peformances.
