Brendan Rodgers has since he joined Leicester made a number of signings for the club, but none yet from the SPL and Scotland. SPL is a league BR knows well and he has not yet made any signings or flirted much with his previous club or any other teams up there.
In previous transfer windows and also in this one a number of names has been linked with Leicester and the latest to be so is Joe Aribo. The Nigerian international is an interesting player but will he meet the standards of the Premier League.
Scottish SPL looks on paper as a two horse race between Celtic and Rangers. During the days of Brendan Rodgers up there, it was really a one horse race. The level of quality of the SPL is to be questioned. Not Championship standard and could be compered with League One.
Joe Aribo is a good footballer but is he better than Kasey McAteer or Hamza Choudhury. What about Nampalys Mendy and youngster Sammy Braybrooke. You have a lot to think about before going into the market. The previous Charlton Athletic player is a HGP so in that sence he will be a good addition.
We have seen in previous settings that going north can cost you dearly as we did see Craig Levein looking to his former club Hearts for recruitment. The standard of those additions from SPL never helped Leicester climbing the table and instead made the team weaker, starting a fall that ended in relegation to League One.
Going back to the 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s the Scottish influence in the English game was huge and every team had a Scottish player with unique influence. There were players coming down to England from school and others signed from clubs for lower fees. Over the years you also had a number of major moves, such as Kenny Dalglish and Gordon Strachan, going south after having great success up north with Celtic and Aberdeen.
The last major signing done from Scotland by Leicester that really worked wonders was the move for Gary McAllister. He joined Leicester as far back as 1985, and since then we have not seen a major signing directly from a club in Scotland that has been fantastic.
The trap is to look at performances from a league with lower standards than Premier League and forget the real capacity of the player, sometimes you will be fooled.
Leicester did have a major amount of Scottish players, especially under the time of Jock Wallace was in charge. Despite bringing in half of Scotland he only managed one struggling season in the top flight of English football.
We do believe that Leicester will go into the market in January and Joe Aribo is a player that could be of good need. He is a HGP, but will be in the AFCON during January so short term he might not be the player to bring in.
We believe that additions to the squad at this time would be players available straight away, but you never know, as signings could also be long term prospects. Check our latest update on our list of transfer targets.
